The choice of a road in tunnel is often an increasingly environmentally attractive solution to road alignment when compared with a new road at or above ground level. This study examines the important factors involved, namely the raison d'etre for tunnel, the geotechnical constraints on construction, the design of the tunnel (particularly with respect to mechanical and electrical installations), operation methods and the costs of operating for each tunnel.
