Notes	A brief overview is given of the current status of British and European bridge codes and the calibration studies undertaken with relation to these codes. A calibration study was taken by the author to evaluate retaionalised partial material safety factors for concrete bridges designed to the British code B5400: Part 4. The methodology adopted, results obtained and limitations on the approach are presented.
