Abstract: The literature pertaining to the structural implications of thealkali silica reaction in concrete s critically reviewed. The implications of the reults of the literature review for structural assessment, and, in particular, the structural assessment of highway structures, are considered in terms of possible critical elements and the use of BS5400: Part 4: 1084. The available methods of assessing the strength of structural elements are briefly reviewed, and recommendations made for allowing for the effects of the alkali silica reaction in the various methods of assessment.
