This paper considers the effects of errors in estimating the axle danage factor of commercial vehicles on pavement life, and from the results produced guidelines as to the required accuracy of the axle damage factor. An expression is developed that expresses error in the axle weighing error when they occur in combination. This expresson provides a means of determining the various trade-offs that are possible between the different types of axle weighing error while maintaining their combined effect below a maximum acceptable level.
