Abstract: There are over 40,000 masonary arch bridges in the UK and a similar number of railway arches. Most over a hundred years old and are expected to carry loads well in excess of those common when they were built. The effect of time, and the increased traffic loads that they are now required or strengthened. The cost and types of strengthening and repair vary widely, and the relative benefits of the various repair methods need to be quantified.
