Abstract: The report summarises the state of available variable message sign technology worldwide. There are two basic types of variable message sign in use: Electro-mechanic and Light emitting, there are also various combinations of the two. The uses of these types of variable message signs are listed. Newtechnologies foe variable message signs sucha as liquid crystal/fibre-optic display signs are also discussed. The report lays the foundation for detailed analysis of the feasibility of developing these signs into remote sign changing systems for the use at roadworks. The report also sets out the criteria for that analysis.
