       Notes - general: In order to review current road surface dressing
                        practice, the County Surveyor's Society initiated a
                        survey among its members.  A number of County Highway
                        Authorities responded and collated data from selected
                        surface dressing sites laid in 1988.  This paper
                        reviews the data, together with visual assessments
                        made by both the Counties and TRRL.  The specification
                        and procedures adopted are compared with the current
                        recommendations given in Road Note No. 39.
